Get Those Goals Set For The New Year!
It is amazing how many businesses do not have goals or objectives set for both themselves personally and for their business. When I sit down with clients I try and ask them what they would like to achieve within the next 12 months and in some cases even further than that. Why do I ask them? Well, I get them to start thinking about the future, what challenges they might face if they want to achieve their goals and how they can overcome them, do they have the financial and time resources to hit their goals and if not how we can overcome this challenge?
I always remember a presentation I did about this where I compared goal setting to driving a car and not knowing how to get from A to B without a sat nav, you need to know where you are going and the route you need to take to get there, the same is for your business if you want to succeed and grow, you need some directions otherwise you will be aimlessly driving your business in the wrong direction.
Goal setting will also maintain motivation, especially during difficult times as you can talk through the setbacks and create new goals to help address these underlying issues. It will also help you prioritise your time as time management issues are all about prioritising the right things and the important tasks should be those that help you achieve your goals.
Your goals should be SMART – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant & Timely and most importantly you should be accountable to someone as there is no point taking the time to get your goals written down but you forget about them or do not measure your performance against these goals on a regular basis.
I have first hand experience of doing this by using the Traction (Gino Wickman) strategies where we write down our Rocks (Goals) broken down to weekly, monthly, quarterly & annually and I’m held accountable at weekly meetings to make sure I’m on track to delivering the goals I have set myself. The results have been amazing and I have only seen positive results of implementing this.
We all know that goal setting is important because they build self confidence and help you increase productivity, they trigger positive behaviour, they guide your focus and sustain momentum as seeing progress is addictive. However, how many of us actually think about our goals and write them down? Maybe 2022 will be different.
