Many articles have been circling since lockdown about the fact that us accountants might be the SME superheroes of Covid-19. That being said, I’ve also seen multiple posts on LinkedIn and other social channels whereby business owners are unable to get in touch with their accountant during this period and have received little to no guidance from them at all.
If you are ever in a situation where a seed of doubt starts to set in with regards to your current accountant, whether it be due to their response to the pandemic or something that you’ve been ignoring for quite some time now, ask yourself the following questions:
- Are they being proactive, I just get the old numbers, what about the future?
- Do they actually understand my business and personal goals on a deeper level?
- Are they available? Easy to communicate with? Or do they just contact me once a year with a bill?
If the answer to the above questions is no, then it might be the right time to consider switching accountants. Switching accountants is a big decision. The relationship between accountant and business owner should be a very personal one and cutting off a relationship with a trusted business advisor can be extremely difficult to do. Loyalty may be a reason to stay, but a business owner simply cannot afford any setbacks – especially where tax and compliance are concerned.
You are absolutely right to feel annoyed if your accountant doesn’t provide the level you expected and doesn’t go above and beyond to truly make an impact on your business and personal life. An accountant should be more than a ''bean counter", which is important, but also someone who will actively seek to take an interest in your business, to listen, understand and provide an objective view and opinion. Not to put obstacles in front of your vision, but to help steer a course through the hidden dangers that being in business will inevitably bring.
They should continue to ensure the key areas have been thought through and considered in full, they will seek to help business owners achieve their goals by assisting to remove these barriers to performance, releasing the potential in your ideas and concept.
These 3 questions are important to me as an advisor too. They have certainly made me think more about my role and it has certainly improved my relationship with my clients, which I view more as one of a partnership.

So… ask yourself these questions, ask yourself if your accountant has been your superhero through Covid-19, and ask yourself why you haven’t already made the change.
